Skills can be increased by gaining experience to it by performing related actions. Thankfully, any gaps in your skills can be remedied with the right companions. However, some skills are more useful than others, especially since Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is set in Calradia during a time of great strife where war, battle, and banditry is common improving combat related skills is crucial in order to succeed early on. I'm not certain as to how much XP you get from it, but it did seem to be a fairly hefty amount. I haven't tested this much, but I also suppose you could attempt to escape battles by sacrificing troops and items for tactics XP as well. Auto-resolve seems to give very minimal XP to tactics. Subsequent kills (and maybe deaths?) by your party (and maybe army?) will increase tactics slowly. Tactics can be leveled up slowly through battle by issuing an order (simple F1-F3 or F6 would suffice) at least once. Trebuchets seem to give the most XP (I'm not certain about that, but it felt that way to me). It is much faster to increase engineering through building siege engines. Tactics is leveled by issuing orders in battle and, I think, auto-resolving battles. The longer you're leading a Siege, the more exp you'll get towards it. O'Neill:Engineering can be increased from sieges.
